The Good Brew Company | Kombucha in a can, a powder or a tea bag: what each one is

Kombucha is defined by how it is made, not by what it is packed in. So kombucha in a can and kombucha in a bottle can be the same drink. A powder, a tablet, a tea bag or a syrup is a different kind of product. None of them is a finished drink in the pack, and the pack is what tells you which one you have.

You are holding a can, a sachet or a box of tea bags. You want to know whether what is in it is the same drink as the bottle in the fridge. Here is what each format is.

Is kombucha in a can the same as kombucha in a bottle?

Chilled kombucha in a plain can and glass bottle beside a fermentation vessel.

Yes, if what went into the can was fermented. The container is not the thing that makes a drink kombucha.

The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code sets out what a brewed soft drink is. That is the category name the law uses for a drink made this way. The Code calls it a food prepared by a fermentation process. What goes into that ferment is water and sugar, plus an extract or infusion of fruit or vegetables. The wording sits in Standard 1.1.2, the definitions standard, in the compilation dated 29 October 2024. Our page on what kombucha is covers the drink itself.

Look at what is missing from that definition. It describes a process. It says nothing about glass, aluminium or plastic. Fermentation happens in the vessel, weeks before anything is filled. The pack cannot undo it, and it cannot supply it either.

One thing does change with the pack. It is whether the drink is kept cold. Whether kombucha has to stay in the fridge is its own question. The answer turns on how the drink was made, not on what it is in.

What is in a kombucha powder?

Powder stirred into a glass of water beside a separate bottled kombucha.

A kombucha powder is a drink powder you stir into water. The pack holds a dry mix, not a fermented drink.

One instant kombucha powder sold in Australia was read in full for this article. Its ingredient list runs to fifteen separately named entries. The kombucha is one of them, listed as freeze dried. Freeze dried means the water was drawn off a frozen product, leaving a dry solid.

Around that entry sit fruits, a prebiotic fibre blend, a sweetener, a thickener and an anticaking agent. Two plant extracts are in there too, and the pack carries an allergen line stating that the product contains caffeine. A group of probiotic strains is named separately. The serving instruction is on the pack: mix a teaspoon with 200 ml of water or sparkling water.

That is the honest shape of that pack. A powder like it is a drink powder containing dried kombucha. It is a different product from a fermented drink. Neither one is a fake, and a long list is not a mark against anybody.

Naming the strains says what went into the pack, not what they do in a person. What probiotics deliver is a separate subject, and our page on probiotics and prebiotics covers it.

One caution. This is one pack. It settles what that product contains and nothing about any other powder on the shelf.

Do kombucha tea bags make kombucha?

Black tea bag steeping beside sugar and a separate kombucha culture.

Not on their own. A kombucha tea bag is tea for making kombucha, rather than kombucha.

One Australian box sold as kombucha tea bags was checked for this article. Its whole published ingredient statement is certified organic black tea. The other variety is certified organic green tea. There is nothing else in the bag.

The pack’s own brewing guide is the giveaway. It has you steep the bags, sweeten the tea, cool it, then add a culture. A culture is the living mix of bacteria and yeast that does the fermenting. Until it goes in, no fermentation has happened. What you are holding is sweet tea on its way to becoming something else. Our guide to making kombucha at home covers that work.

The Code lines up with the pack. It defines tea as the product made from the leaves and leaf buds of Camellia sinensis, the tea plant. Dried leaf is where a kombucha starts, not where it finishes.

What are kombucha tablets, capsules, shots, syrups and concentrates?

Small kombucha shot, concentrate being diluted and a plain capsule jar.

Kombucha tablets, capsules, shots, syrups and concentrates cover three jobs between them. Each pack tells you how it is meant to be taken.

A tablet or a capsule is something to swallow. A shot is a small volume to drink in one go. A syrup or a concentrate is something to dilute. Diluting means adding water or another drink to bring it back to drinking strength.

A concentrated kombucha base is a real trade product rather than an oddity. One Australian manufacturer publishes that its base is supplied in bulk. It is sold ready for the maker of the finished drink to dilute, sweeten and flavour to their own recipe. Concentrate there means the ferment with most of its water still to come.

One difference sits behind all of these packs. In Australia a fermented drink and a dried supplement are sold under different rules. A regulator governs where the line falls. So the claims a pack is allowed to make are not the same in both.

Which one do you want?

Person choosing a chilled kombucha bottle with a can and tea bags nearby.

The format you want depends on what you plan to do with it, not on a ranking. Each one is made for a different moment.

Want a cold drink now? That is a bottle or kombucha in a can. Want something small to carry? A dry pack or a shot is built for it. If brewing your own is the plan, the tea bag is the start of that job rather than a shortcut past it.

The pack is where you find out which one you have bought. In Brunswick you can skip the reading and call into the tap room, because a cold bottle is the point of walking in. Everywhere else, turn the thing over before it goes in the trolley. If a cold one is what you are after, the Good Brew kombucha range is one place to start.

One question sorts every pack in this article. Has the fermentation already happened, or are you buying the makings? A pack that tells you to add water, or to add a culture, has already answered you.

Frequently asked questions

Is canned kombucha real kombucha?

It is, provided the drink inside was fermented. The Food Standards Code defines the category by how a drink was made. No part of that definition mentions the container.

Is kombucha powder the same as the drink?

No. A powder is a dry mix that becomes a drink once you add water. The pack holds an ingredient rather than a finished ferment.

What is in a kombucha tea bag?

Tea leaf. The Australian box read for this article lists certified organic black or green tea and nothing else. That is why its instructions have you add a culture afterwards.

What is a kombucha shot?

A small serve meant to be drunk in one go. The format describes the volume and how it is taken. On its own it tells you nothing about how the liquid was produced.

Does a kombucha powder contain live culture?

Only the pack in front of you can answer that. The powder read for this article lists its kombucha as freeze dried, and names its probiotic strains as separate additions. That is a fact about one product, not about powders in general.
