Good Brew research in plain English

Good Brew research covers two different kinds of evidence. One paper looked at what was present in the tested kombucha base. Another paper looked at a short term meal response in healthy adults. Those are not the same thing.

The useful point is not that one study answers every question. The useful point is that Good Brew has been willing to put its product into research settings and explain the results with boundaries.

What the microbial testing found

The microbial analysis describes what was present in Good Brew’s original base kombucha. It was published in Nutrients in 2021 and included RMIT University affiliation through the Pangenomics Group, School of Science.

The paper identified 34 genera and 200 microbial species in the tested Good Brew base kombucha. A microbial profile is a way of describing the bacteria and yeasts identified in a sample. In kombucha, that profile can be affected by the tea, sugar, starter culture, fermentation time, temperature, bottling, and storage.

The result is useful because kombucha is a live ferment, and live ferments are not all the same. A pasteurised drink, a force carbonated drink, and a properly fermented live kombucha may be very different products, even when they sit in the same drinks category.

What the blood sugar trial can and cannot show

The blood sugar and insulin response study was published in Frontiers in Nutrition in 2023. It used a randomised, single blinded, placebo controlled crossover design and involved 11 healthy adults.

The study tested a standard high GI rice based meal consumed with one of three drinks: soda water, diet lemonade soft drink, or organic kombucha from The Good Brew Company. The kombucha meal was associated with lower post meal glucose and insulin responses than the same meal consumed with soda water.

That finding is narrow but meaningful. Under the conditions tested, this specific unpasteurised kombucha changed the acute post meal response compared with the control drink. The responsible reading is to keep the result tied to the study design.

Why research matters for a live food brand

Live fermented products are variable by nature. Ingredients, culture, fermentation conditions, bottling, storage, and handling can affect what ends up in the glass. That is why research matters for Good Brew. The Brunswick brewery is not relying only on generic kombucha language.
